Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been an avid reader since childhood. I read almost all genres, but my favorite genre is fiction. I love fiction for the escape, and I love it even more when the books stay with me long after I’ve finished reading the last page. Whether it’s the amazing characters, provocative themes, or enviable relationships, most of my favorite books are the ones that I can’t stop thinking about. I’d love to give readers the same joy when they read my books and hope they continue to think about my characters long after they’re done reading.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of My Friends

Rachel Cullen Why I love this book

I love all of Fredrik Backman’s books, but My Friends became an instant favorite as soon as I read it.

I love it for its deeply flawed yet intensely lovable characters and the powerful bonds that tie them together. Despite the tragedies the characters face in the story, I couldn’t help but be envious of their friendships and feel that every teenager could overcome whatever life throws at them if only they had these boys by their sides.

Book cover of Atmosphere

Rachel Cullen Why I love this book

I didn’t know much about Atmosphere before I started it, but I was hooked from the first chapter and didn’t want it to end.

While fictional, the novel hit close to home growing up in the 1980’s in Houston, Texas. There were many references to Texas at that time, and the development of the space program felt nostalgic, while also providing fascinating new information.

I loved the main characters in the book, their complicated relationship, and the struggles they faced, given the time and circumstances. The characters and their story stuck with me long after I finished the book.

Rachel Cullen Why I love this book

I loved the original premise of The Poppy Fields.

The novel takes a unique approach to grief, healing, and hope that makes it both hard to put down and hard to forget long after the book is done.

Book cover of Culpability

Rachel Cullen Why I love this book

I still think about the topics raised in the novel, Culpability, on a regular basis.

Holsinger’s drama about moral responsibility and Artificial Intelligence raises issues that are increasingly relevant in daily life, but the book delivers its thought-provoking points through a fascinating storyline and entertaining characters.

The novel is highly provocative while weaving in mundane topics like sibling rivalry, high school sports, and marital troubles to make it relatable.

Book cover of Romantic Comedy

Rachel Cullen Why I love this book

There are three things about Romantic Comedy that put it on my favorites list and make it a book that has stayed with me.

First, the development of the relationship between the main characters is adorable and features some of the wittiest flirtatious emails I’ve read. Second, the book is based on a fictional version of a late-night show, and as an SNL fan, it really resonated.

Third, the majority of the novel is set during the pandemic and evoked memories of that time that were both relatable and evocative.
